In paper making, lime is essential for regenerating chemicals used in the pulping method. It is used where it reacts with green liquor (sodium carbonate) to produce white liquor (sodium hydroxide). This white liquor is then reused to break down wood chips into pulp. Additionally, lime is used to adjust the pH levels during the papermaking process and as a filler to improve the brightness, opacity, and smoothness of the final paper product.

High-calcium lime is favored for its reactivity in the pulping process, dolomitic lime enhances causticizing and equipment protection, and hydrated lime is used for pH adjustment and as a slurry.
